What barter collaboration is and what it costs
In a barter collaboration, a business provides a product or service and a creator produces agreed content in return. There may be no cash payment, but both parties contribute resources. Barter should not be treated as free advertising.
Define what you are exchanging
Agree whether you need a post on the creator's profile or UGC — user-generated content, such as a video for your business channels. These are different tasks. Receiving a product does not itself mean agreeing to advertise it: settle the terms before shipping.
Costs for the business
There is no universal price. Consider the cost of providing the product or service, delivery and coordination time. Retail price is not the same as the business's actual cost, and it does not automatically determine the value of content.
The creator's contribution
Planning, filming, editing, photography and communication take time. Consider whether you genuinely want the product and whether the exchange matches the workload. You can suggest a smaller scope, additional payment or decline. Barter is optional.
Agree a specific outcome
Put the content, platform, deadline, delivery, revision process and whether the creator keeps the product in writing. Separately agree on reposting, paid advertising and the duration of permission. These rights are not automatically included in barter.
Disclose the collaboration clearly
If content is made in exchange for a product or service, make that clear to the audience. Do not ask a creator to hide compensation or promise a positive review regardless of their experience. Discuss disclosure and platform tools before publication.
Other obligations still apply
No cash transfer does not necessarily mean no accounting or tax obligations. These depend on your circumstances and applicable rules; consult an accountant if needed.
